GLORIOUS TIBUR

Just 30 minutes from the city there is one of the most historically significant and breathtaking towns of Ancient Rome, Tivoli. Once known as Tibur, it was famous for its travertine stone, which was used to build some of Rome’s most iconic landmarks, from the Colosseum to St. Peter’s Basilica.

Tivoli is also home to the grand estate of Emperor Hadrian: Villa Adriana, an incredible 250-acre residence that reflects the architectural brilliance of the Roman Empire. Originally built during the Republican era, Hadrian transformed it into an extraordinary form of architecture.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Your experience will last 8 hours and will begin with a private driver picking you up from your hotel and taking you to Tivoli, where our first stop will be Villa Adriana. During a two-hour guided tour, you’ll explore the ruins of this magnificent estate and learn about its fascinating history. Next, we’ll head into Tivoli’s charming medieval center, where you’ll have free time to wander through its picturesque streets, enjoy a local lunch, or visit the gardens of Villa Gregoriana.

In the afternoon, we’ll visit the stunning Villa D’este, a site renowned for its breathtaking fountains and gardens. Before returning to Rome, we’ll make a final stop at Cave del Barco, where the travertine used for the Colosseum and St. Peter’s Basilica was extracted. Here, you’ll hear the story of the quarries and their significance throughout history.

For a more immersive experience, we can arrange a visit to the quarries during the stone-cutting process, where you’ll witness firsthand the ancient craft that shaped Roman architecture. This exclusive add-on is available upon request for an additional fee.
